While Tampa Bay, Milwaukee, Detroit and Kansas City have virtually locked up the first four positions in the 2003 Amateur Draft, the fifth pick is still very much up for grabs. Considering the finances and draft histories of the aforementioned teams, the best available player could conceivably fall to the fifth pick due to signability issues or scouting ineptitude. The Indians’ loss to Toronto on Wednesday (coupled with Colorado’s win) gives them the eighth-worst record in baseball. San Diego’s stirring come-from-ahead loss to Arizona keeps them four games in front of the Tribe in the race for the fifth pick.
