at the end of last night’s game, when reporters asked charlie manuel why colon was in the game in the ninth, charlie replied that colon said he wanted to pitch, and that charlie “wanted him to get the shutout”. as my great aunt doris used to say, “ye gods!” charlie would gladly sacrifice his ace’s arm for a statistic? i long for an explanation as to why charlie kept colon in some other games when the score was 4 to 2…”colon wanted to see if he could scare the opposition into submission on his 130th pitch.” the manager ought to be in charge of deciding whether or not the pitcher comes out of a game. i wonder if colon’s agent has anything to do with this?
